Work is well underway in Afan Forest Park with the new green graded trail being built and also major renovations to the popular Visitor Centre.
I have had a lucky preview of where the new trail will go and it is going to be a cracker! Starting at the Visitor Centre the trail wanders towards the Kanji gardens and drops down to the other side of the river. It opens up parts of the Afan Valley that have yet to be seen and will be perfect for mountain bike newcomers (it will also be something a bit different for flat out die hards).
Although most of the trail is green graded the last section will actually be a blue. This will provide a natural progression for new riders.
The Visitor Centre will have a new refurbished café with folding glass doors overlooking the valley, leading out onto a covered terrace and creating an inviting outside seating area.
The foyer will be redesigned as a more open, appealing space giving visitors a warmer welcome, better access to the South Wales Miners’ Museum and new toilet facilities. There will also be a new meeting room and general improvements to the building.
The Visitor Centre main building is currently closed however it will reopen on March 3rd 2012. But in the meantime the classrooms behind the main building are open as a café and the Miners Museum is open as usual.
